Kindergarten

Miss Summer is a Kindergarten Teacher – both AM and PM classes. Her favorite EL Design Principle is “Success and Failure”. She tries to teach her kindergarteners that making mistakes is great and that it helps us learn: there is no shame in failing! She also helps them celebrate when someone is successful. She loves to read and try to crochet and knit. She spends a lot of time with her big family, – especially her nieces and nephews. She taught pre-school for 4 years before moving up to Kindergarten – this is her 4th year at Entheos. Miss Summer graduated from University of Utah with a Bachelor’s degree in Early Child Education.

Stephanie Wheeler

Ms. Stephanie is an AM Kindergarten Teacher. Her favorite EL Design Principle is “The Responsibility for Learning”. As a student and teacher, she feels responsiblity for her own learning, as well as passing on that responsibility to her students. She loves to read, color, and spend time with her son. Ms. Stephanie has lived all over the country, as well as Denmark and Spain. She has 11 states left to visit, and Japan is on her bucket list. Ms. Stephanie graduated cum laude from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock with a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education, and she will graduate Summer 2020 from Concordia University with a Master’s in STEAM.

First Grade

Miss Cindy is a 1st Grade Teacher. She connects most with the EL Design Principle of “Empathy and Caring”. Miss Cindy strives to foster a crew where kindness and respect thrive and where each crew member looks out for one another. She feels that learning and curiosity can be best nurtured in an environment of mutual trust. Miss Cindy has 4 wonderful children of her own who she loves. She enjoys listening to audiobooks and helping students gain the skills necessary to unlock the exciting adventures hidden within the pages of books. If she could go on her own real life adventure, she would visit her grandmother’s home in Ireland. Miss Cindy graduated from University of Phoenix.

Melanie Speirs

Ms. Melanie is a 1st Grade Teacher and her favorite EL Design Principle is “Service and Compassion”. She is passionate about service and feels that service and compassion are not only what society is severely lacking, but also what takes a person from good to amazing. She feels that children should be taught these principles early in life. She loves to read, absolutely loves the beach, and is teaching herself to crochet. She has three of her own children and is a very busy basketball, dance and baseball mom. Ms. Melanie graduated with her Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Governors University.

Melissa Durfee

Mrs. Durfee is a 2nd Grade Teacher. Her favorite EL Design Principle is “The Having of Wonderful Ideas”. She loves to celebrate and learn from the wonderful and creative ideas of children. She grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada and has traveled outside of the US to Korea, England, France and Italy, and would love to visit Japan or Australia. She loves teaching second grade, reading, cooking, the smells of lavender and eucalyptus, and going on nature walks. Her all time favorite food is sushi, and her love for succulent gardens is very great. Mrs. Durfee graduated from Brigham Young University.

Ms. Holfeltz is a 2nd Grade Teacher. Her favorite EL Design Principle is “Success and Failure”. She believes that all students need to be successful if they are to build the confidence and capacity to take risks and meet increasingly difficult challenges. She also believes that it is important for students to learn from their mistakes, to persevere when things are hard, and to learn to turn failure into opportunities. Her favorite hobby is drawing and her favorite subject is Math. Her favorite places to go are the mountains and the beach. She loves to go hiking, camping, and fishing with her family. She also loves to go swimming with her little boy during summer break and working in her yard. She has worked with students from kindergarten – 9th grade before she came to Entheos. Ms. Holfeltz obtained her degree in Elementary Education through Western Governors University and she almost has her Master’s in Math.

Third Grade

Mr. Penate is a 3rd Grade Teacher and his favorite EL Design Principle is “Collaboration and Competition” working together for the best of both worlds. It is awesome to be united as a crew and make sure that each student feels special. He loves teaching as well as being the Director of Musical Theater productions at Entheos Academy, and this is his 6th school year at Entheos. He loves to play and watch basketball. Mr. Penate graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Ms. Blackburn is a 3rd Grade Teacher. Her favorite EL Design Principle is “Empathy and Caring”. She is passionate about teaching, and loves helping kids be successful in their learning. This means that she respects the students, and they respect her, which builds a safe trusting learning environment. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her 4 year old grandson, watching movies, swimming, and being with her family. One day she hopes to visit Australia. Ms. Blackburn received her Master’s degree in Education, March 2019, from Liberty University.

Fourth Grade

Mrs. Hocking is a 4th Grade Teacher. After teaching students at the University of Puerto Rico to be teachers for over twenty-five years, she decided to retire early and become an elementary teacher herself. She feels it has been the best decision she made in her processional career and a very emotional one. She has three children and three grandchildren that are the loves of her life. She loves to play the piano, do arts and crafts, and play on the beach and in the snow.

Mrs. Mendisabal is a 4th Grade Teacher. Her favorite EL Design Principle is “Service and Compassion”. She believes that when a person looks outside of themselves to serve others, their heart opens and their capacity to love grows. She knows that helping others builds a brighter community. She is passionate about teaching and learning, and sees it is as a life-long pursuit. Mrs. Mendisabal was born and raised in New Zealand but has lived in Utah for the past 18 years. Her favorite hobby is reading, and she looks for any opportunity she can to get lost within the pages of a good book. Her favorite authors are JK Rowling and Jane Austen. Mrs. Mendisabal attended Auckland University and is currently enrolled at Western Governors University.

Fifth Grade

Mr. Parker is a 5th Grade Teacher, and his favorite EL Design Principle is “Empathy and Caring”. He has been at Entheos Academy since 2016, and is seen as a very energetic teacher who likes to interact and joke with his students. He enjoys being in the outdoors, and has a goal with his family to visit every National Park in the United States. Mr. Parker earned a degree in Elementary Education from Brigham Young University, and received a Masters in Social Work at the University of Utah.

Mrs. Jensen is a 5th Grade Teacher. She feels that the EL Design Principle “Collaboration and Competition” is important in all aspects of development in ALL stages of life and education. Mrs. J collaborates with herself, her family, and her colleagues to fine tune her practices and expectations. Competition is key in development self and group accomplishments. Mrs. J expects her students to collaborate and compete individually and in groups to be the best crew possible. She has 4 kids and enjoys camping, hiking, and fishing with her family. Mrs. Jensen graduated with her Elementary Education degree from Utah Valley University in May 2013.

Miss Missy is a Kindergarten Para. She relates best to the EL Design Principle “The Natural World”. Along with her husband and her two girls, she loves exploring the great outdoors by hiking, camping, and kayaking. Their favorite hikes are those that lead to ancient ruins, petroglyphs, Indian living quarters, dinosaur findings and anything like that. They are a very adventurous family. Her hobbies include making custom craft items, drawing, and coaching her girl’ softball teams. One of her favorite places to go is beautiful Yellowstone National Park.

She loves how we teach our students to become better members of society and show them how much service is needed in our community and how service can be fun and enjoyable. She loves to play a variety of sports, hiking, swimming and being with her family.

Ms. Deb is a 1st Grade Para who loves “littles.” When her three children left elementary school, she missed working with students, so she returned to assist in preschool and now first grade. Anything pertaining to her family is what makes her happy. She often says that negativity takes too much work and can always find the silver lining.

Mrs. Clark is a 2nd Grade Para. She particularly likes the Design Principle of “Empathy and Caring” which ties into showing kindness and kindness is key. One of her favorite quotes is, “In a world where you can choose to be anything, choose to be kind!” Mrs. Clark and her husband have an amazing family with 3 children and 2 grandchildren. In her downtime she enjoys reading, watching Masterpiece on PBS, cooking/baking, spending time with family and travels to Florida to visit her grandchildren.

Mrs. Smith is a 2nd Grade Para. Her favorite EL Design Principle is “Diversity and Inclusion,” because she likes to see students developing their problem-solving skills and being respectful of each other. Mrs. Smith is originally from Finland, and she also lived in Japan before moving to Utah in 2005. She loves reading, drawing, baking, and spending time with her son and husband. Mrs. Smith has a master’s degree from the University of Helsinki in Finland.

Mr. Dave is a 3rd Grade Para. One of his favorite EL Design Principles is “The Primacy of Self Discovery”. He believes that the spectrum of learning techniques people use in everyday life is constantly expanding and self-discovery is a great way to find what works for that particular person in a relatively short amount of time. He enjoys the outdoors: camping, fishing, hiking and skiing. He is a martial arts enthusiast and loves to study multiple forms of self defense. He enjoys board games as well as older strategic and roll playing games that stimulate critical thinking and “out of the box”. Mr. Dave has an associates degree in Healthcare Technologies. He put studying Nursing on hold to receive a bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration.

Miss Aysia is a 3rd Grade Para. Her favorite EL Design Principle is “Empathy and Caring”. She believes that empathy and caring for others are essential for a well rounded life, and that everyone participates better when they feel safe in the environment they are in. She loves to play the piano and guitar, as well as playing games with her little brother. She also enjoys swimming, cheer, and running. It is her ambition to travel around the world to learn from different cultures. Miss Aysia is currently in college at Western Governors University.

She has had the pleasure of seeing the students grow in confidence and knowledge, as they take responsibility for their own learning: fear leaves, self confidence grows, and the students blossom. She loves to crochet, read books, and has a Black Belt in Kung Fu.
